Introduction to Beekeeping
This course will introduce you to the European honey bee, Apis mellifera, and to the hobby of beekeeping over three two-hour sessions: Sept 24, Oct.1, & Oct 8, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm.
We will cover the history of beekeeping in the United States, as well as honey bee biology, their incredible social structure, as well as current problems they face.
We will cover the equipment required to safely keep bees, as well as how to establish an apiary of your own.
Information will be provided on how to source your bees, purchase your equipment and inspect your hives, resulting in healthy bees and leading to an eventual honey harvest. Costs associated with starting up will be discussed.
Upon completion of the classes, you will have the option to take a “field trip” to one of my apiaries for some “hands-on” experience.
Note: Personal protective equipment is required to enter the apiary.
